A celebration of nature and art at Mumbai’s Jijamata Udyan

The Magic of a Unique Bonsai-Origami Exhibition in Mumbai

Mumbai: In the city that never sleeps, Jijamata Udyan in Byculla is currently filled with a serene, artistic, and enchanting experience. Organized by the BMC and the Tree Authority of Mumbai in collaboration with the Consulate-General of Japan, the first Bonsai and Origami Show has transformed the garden’s atmosphere into a perfect blend of natural beauty and creativity.

The exhibition opened to the public with its inauguration on Friday and will continue until November 30th, with completely free entry, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Present as chief guests were Mr. Koji Yagi, Consul General of Japan in Mumbai, and Mr. Jitendra Pardeshi, Garden Superintendent of the BMC. This first-of-its-kind exhibition is not just something to be seen, but something to be felt and experienced—where the vibrant beauty of mini trees and the imaginative art of origami are all in one place.

Addressing the event, Mr. Koji Yagi said, “Mumbai and Yokohama were linked in 1965 under the Sister City initiative, which has completed 60 years. This exhibition celebrates this historical bond and cultural partnership. All Mumbaikars should definitely visit this eco-friendly exhibition.”

The origami exhibition features unique models of animals, birds, flowers, and tools—all created with just one piece of paper folded into one fold.

BMC Garden Superintendent Jitendra Pardeshi urged families, children, and nature lovers to participate, saying, “Bonsai is an art that can be brought to every home. Potted plants improve the atmosphere and air quality of the home. Everyone should come with their families and enjoy the exhibition until Sunday.”

The BMC has been successfully organizing plant and flower exhibitions for the past 27 years. And the good news is that a flower exhibition will also be held in the first week of February 2026—a festival every nature lover looks forward to.

Film and TV actress and social media influencer Ekta Jain was also present at the event. She praised this exhibition, organized in collaboration between the two countries, saying that planting a few potted plants at home is the biggest step against air pollution and that such exhibitions inspire people.
