Amarnath Yatra 2026: First batch of 4,800 pilgrims flagged off by LG

Amarnath Yatra 2026: The Amarnath Yatra 2026 has commenced amidst devotion, enthusiasm, and stringent security arrangements. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first batch of over 4,800 pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. During this 57-day-long holy pilgrimage, lakhs of devotees will travel via the Pahalgam and Baltal routes to reach the Amarnath Cave and seek blessings of the natural ice Shivling of ‘Baba Barfani,’ nestled in the Himalayas.

Located at an altitude of approximately 3,880 meters above sea level in the South Kashmir Himalayas, the Shri Amarnath Cave is one of the country’s most prominent religious pilgrimage sites. The naturally formed ice Shivling here is revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva, and lakhs of devotees undertake the arduous journey every year to witness it.

This year, the 57-day Amarnath Yatra will officially begin on July 3 and continue until August 28 (Raksha Bandhan). Pilgrims will reach the holy cave simultaneously via two routes: the traditional 48-kilometer-long Nunwan-Pahalgam route and the 14-kilometer-long Baltal route.

These routes include a 3.5-kilometer-long tunnel connecting Digdol and Panthyal on the strategically important Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, as well as an 810-meter-long viaduct (bridge) near Ramsu.

Pilgrims will travel along the highway to reach their respective destinations at the Pahalgam and Baltal base camps. The 57-day pilgrimage will commence the following day via these two routes.

Railway preparations for the Amarnath Yatra
Earlier, the Jammu Railway Division had strengthened security arrangements at the station and implemented several measures for the convenience of travelers ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra. According to railway officials, their focus is on pilgrim safety, crowd management, and the provision of essential amenities. Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Jammu), told PTI, “When we speak of the Amarnath Yatra, it is a highly significant event for this region, particularly Jammu and Kashmir. It holds immense religious importance as well. All arrangements have been made keeping this in mind.”

He stated that the Railways has made comprehensive arrangements for the pilgrims, focusing on three key aspects. “Safety is the top priority. Ticket-checking staff, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), and the Government Railway Police (GRP) are working in coordination to prevent any untoward incidents at the station. The movement of pilgrims is being systematically managed to ensure a safe and hassle-free journey,” he said.

He added that the Railways has also deployed Scouts and Guides at the station to assist the pilgrims. “Volunteers are helping passengers navigate the station—especially given the ongoing redevelopment work—with the aim of minimizing inconvenience to the public.”

Singhal mentioned that the Railways is also ensuring passengers receive timely information regarding train delays, schedule changes, or any operational adjustments through regular public announcements and bulk SMS alerts.

Ensuring Food Safety During the Amarnath Yatra
As part of the preparations to welcome the pilgrims, Khalid Jahangir, Commissioner of the Jammu and Kashmir Food and Drugs Administration, inspected the langar (community kitchen) site at Chanderkote on Wednesday. He was accompanied by Joint Commissioner (Food Safety) Sanjeev Kumar and Ramban Food Safety Officer Balbir Singh to review food safety arrangements ahead of the pilgrimage.

Speaking to ANI, Khalid Jahangir stated that the department has deployed specialized food safety teams along the pilgrimage route. He said, “We are fully prepared for the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. Special food safety teams have been deployed to monitor langars and other food outlets to ensure that pilgrims receive safe, hygienic, and high-quality food throughout the pilgrimage.”
